Hello Chris, It is true the gas lifters are the only thing holding the print heads up. Please know when a lifter fails it usually warns you first. As the seal wears it begins to leak gas slowly. You will first notice the lift not being quite as strong one day, this will be the first sign the lifter will need to be replaced, maybe soon or maybe in a few months. It would be best to order the new springs at that point, so you will have them long before they will drop the head.
