  I have been using GIMP for years, both in Windows and now in Ubuntu Linux.

While it is NOT a full replacement to Photoshop, it can do most things fairly well. (takes some getting used to though!)

The print functions are sorely lacking, as is the fact there is no native CMYK support.

I do like the fact that it will run on slower machines that would typically choke on Photoshop.

Inkscape is great, as is Scribus.(page layout app)
